Expressionism. Masterpieces from the Thyssen-Bornemisza Foundation, from Van Gogh to Klee inaugurates the activity of Fondazione Memmo in Rome, with the aim of permanently enrich the panorama of major exhibitions in Italy. The event enjoyed the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic, and all the proceeds were donated for the benefit of the Italian Association for Cancer Research.

The show features 47 paintings, ranging from late Van Gogh to Dix, Klee, Kandinsky, Grosz, Nolde, Kirchner, and other Masters of European Twentieth-century art. These artworks represent a cohesive nucleus within the vast collection of Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza, comprising approximately fifteen hundred works.

The Foundation is located in one of the most beautiful palaces of the Roman Renaissance, Palazzo Ruspoli, built by Bartolomeo Ammannati and frescoed by Jacopo Zucchi, originally for the Rucellai family, later passed to the Caetani, and then to the Ruspoli. For its activities, Palazzo Ruspoli relies on the work of a high-level scientific committee composed by Giuliano Briganti, Bruno Mantura, and Carlo Pietrangeli.

“Expressionism” represents the first step in collaboration with the Thyssen-Bornemisza Foundation, enabling the hosting of other important exhibitions, particularly those coming from major private museums in America and Europe.
